He Nationwide Tour is the developmental tour for the U.S.-based PGA Tour, and features professional golfers who have either failed to score well enough at that level's Qualifying School (the main tour's qualifying tournament, popularly referred to as "Q-School") to earn their PGA Tour card, or who have done so but then failed to win enough money to stay at that level. Those who are on the top 25 of the money list at year's end are given PGA Tour memberships for the next season.

It begins this week with the BMW Charity Pro-Am at three different courses in Greenville and Spartanburg, S.C. and Mill Spring, N.C. The format includes celebrities playing with the Nationwide Tour players. Some of the celebrities scheduled to appear are Wayne Gretzky, Cheech Marin and Brad Brownell, who is the Clemson men's basketball coach.

Thanks in part to the celebrities who participate in the BMW Charity Pro-Am, the tournament has raised nearly $8 million for its more than 150 charities since 2001.

Not only are 23 of the top 25 on the money list scheduled to play, but Champions Tour player Jay Haas, who lives in Greenville, will also compete. Jay Haas Jr. is also among those in the field.
