Avnet LPGA Classic Preview:
That oasis appearing in the desert known as the LPGA's spring schedule is no mirage - it's the Avnet LPGA Classic! Formerly the Bell Micro Classic (the company was acquired by Avnet Electronics about 12 months ago), this is officially the third edition of the event which was first played in September 2008. Last year's model was a shortened one - Sunday's final round was wiped out by torrential rains, forcing the officials to conduct a playoff between the three players tied at the end of Saturday's action. Se Ri Pak collected her 25th career victory on the third playoff hole, defeating Brittany Lincicome and Suzann Pettersen.
Magnolia Grove has a history of good scoring, even in last year's event which followed a remodeling job that added about 300 yards to its length. Players who are on with their irons can get the ball to stick where they want it, as the greens are usually very receptive. As long as there are no hurricanes lingering off the coast (witness the higher 2008 average), look for 65s or better from the leaders.
Not a bad field although having just completed three off-weeks with two more on deck, you'd expect the missing - namely Jiyai Shin, In-Kyung Kim and Inbee Park - would be here if just to stave off the rust. A quick check at JLPGA...er, Mostly Harmless shows that Inbee was in action in Japan this past weekend along with Hee Young Park, who did make the long flight to Mobile. Lexi Thompson makes her first start of 2011 thanks to a sponsor's exemption. Also getting into their first events of the year are Hannah Jun, Ryann O'Toole and Dorothy Delasin. Avnet is one of the events which held an open Monday qualifier - Jaclyn Sweeney and Haru Nomura survived the 30-player gauntlet for a chance to tee it up on Thursday.
It's difficult not to take a flyer on Pak defending her title here. She's coming off a T10 in the Kraft Nabisco, plus the fact that 40% of her career victories have come on just three courses - and Magnolia Grove is one of them.
While this particular event has only been held two other times, the Crossings Course played host to the Tournament of Champions from 1999-2007. Players in the field this week who won that event are Paula Creamer, Christina Kim, Dorothy Delasin, Webb and Pak.
